Costa Rica's scuba diving portal: everything you want to know about diving in Costa Rica

About Scuba.cr

Scuba.cr is an independent guide to scuba diving in Costa Rica, online since 2011. We cover dive spots on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, Cocos Island, dive companies, certification and the marine life you'll meet.

Pizote Press

A member of Pizote Press sites

Scuba.cr is part of Pizote Press, a group of independent Costa Rica travel sites. Before that, we were one of the Costa Rica Journeys Guides, the family of Costa Rica travel guides that began in 2010. Pizote Press carries that work forward with the same writers, the same love of the country and a fresh new look. Each one sticks to what it knows best: diving, beaches, eco-lodges, sailing, wellness and the towns and wild places in between. Together they cover the country the way people actually travel it, one interest at a time.

The pizote is the white-nosed coati, the curious, ring-tailed explorer you'll meet on trails all over Costa Rica. It pokes its nose into everything, which is roughly how we like to research a story.

Who we are

Scuba.cr was founded by Geoff McCabe and has been written by divers, dive instructors and travel writers who know Costa Rica's waters, including marine biologist and dive instructor Tristan Paylado.

We're a small, passionate team of travel fanatics who love Costa Rica's underwater world, from the Bat Islands to the Caribbean reefs. A manta gliding past or a whale shark off Caño Island never gets old, and we want every diver who comes here to find the best of it.

What we cover

  • Dive spots from Guanacaste and the Bat Islands to Caño Island, the Caribbean reefs and Cocos Island
  • Dive companies and dive shops, checked against their own websites
  • Certification, from first dives to instructor courses
  • The marine life of Costa Rica: sharks, rays, turtles, whales, dolphins and reef fish

How we work

  • Nobody pays to be listed, ranked or reviewed.
  • We check dive companies and dive spots against official sources and recent first-hand reports.
  • Every article shows who wrote it and when it was last checked, and we update articles when things change.
  • We don't publish prices, because they change too often to be reliable.
  • Photos are credited on each page.
